Sparks

I don't know how not to be in love with you I don't know how not to think about you when I hear a sad song Or wonder how you'd react to a meme Or a particularly hard day in your life.  I'm not aware of what it feels like to cook for you To watch your eyes light up at the thought of someone else caring for you Or watch an old 80s movie with you while you gobble up the popcorn and reach for the cookies I'll never know what you look like fresh out of the shower With your hair all wet and skin radiant I can only imagine the number of seconds you spend brushing your teeth Or what you mumble when you're woken up at some ungodly hour. I can't walk with you past old buildings that tower down on us like the inconsequent creatures we are Or find some sunny day to read our books while you devour sandwiches with your head on my lap.  Put my arm around you in movie theatres or hand you my jacket cause you like the smell and you love to see me non-fatally suffer  Ride bic...

The Ballad of Cleopatra

On nights like this He’ll have to admit  He’ll never love anyone like Her again She was a headstrong Full storm Drop in the ocean Claiming the sky He was a romantic Tad unrealistic  Bred by movies that Were yet to pay dividends  Our story begins In student housing Two strangers intersect And lives change Will they-won’t they Says the crowd Who can tell It’s not going very well He’s old fashioned Never thinks when he speaks She comes off as cold It helps wade out the creeps Unlikely love, unlikely story Never being honest About how they really feel Each getting banged up By each new encounter O woeful heart, will you tell thee The object of their affection Is the one across seas But wait, hold on Could it really be Two fools at heart But full of love  Have decided to show Some honesty? Rejoice, rejoice For this time, it will work Why won’t it They think alike They speak alike They’re the same You wouldn’t believe. He makes her blush She makes him laugh 4 hours away Th...

Hang the DJ

I like it when you sleep for reasons more than one I slip my hand out from under your body And count the little hairs on the nape of your neck One touch and they respond But so do you and I stop I kiss your face gently And watch you squirm away Some would like it You clearly don't I watch the saliva Drip from your mouth Like a raindrop on a dry night Whole for a second and then everywhere You mumble words I don't understand But that's during the day as well I light my cigarette quietly And perch against the window Don't want you to leave again But I need to enjoy this moment There's a world dying out there There are stars we haven't seen yet But that doesn't bother you, for these few hours at least A world forgetting by a world forgot We might not be here tomorrow We might not be here in an hour And I'll fight every force in the world To make sure you wake up Alone But safe I don't know where this is going And I don...

No More Poetry

It's strange I still have our polaroid in my wallet As I recall the two photos we took Utterly disgusted by the first But suitably pleased with the second If only you hadn't vehemently disposed of them And made me feel so small. Your biggest fear in life is getting attached And to be honest, All of us are Scared But once in a while You come across people Who, in every sense of the phrase, Make the world go round. You just know somehow It's like a thought in the back of your head Or a stone in the back of your shoe, It's always there but you learn to ignore it For you know better. When did I know? It's difficult to tell I did not enjoy Stranger Things But would anything beat Falling asleep in your arms? Or when you ran over from Lion King And pretended to understand The equations on my screen While sitting on my lap On that uncomfortable wooden chair Which was clearly meant for one. When did I know? When you knocked on wood While...

The Escapist

"And, in the end, we lie awake And we dream of making our escape" Do you remember the last time you stopped? The last time you took in the fact that you’re alive? The last time you broke from the routine, from the schedule, from the chains. The last time you stopped thinking about the future? How many times have you looked up at the sky and realised that it’s the most gorgeous blue you’ve ever seen? Laid down on a field with no attention of re-joining the world? We’re stuck in a rut. Time is running out.   You were 3 a few days back, cutting a birthday cake and licking the knife out of ignorance. You were spending your vacations unaware of how time flew, unaware of responsibilities. You were 13 a few days back, playing football in the rain and disregarding all sense of personal cleanliness. When the promise of Next Time hung in the air, where it would reside permanently. The time you took for granted, under the promise of its return. You were 18 a few days back when y...

“Don’t write me an essay” “What do you mean?” “I know you’re hurting, but don’t write me an essay” “What else could I possibly do?” “Write me a song, a melodious tune, a Top 100 hit” “I can’t play and you can’t sing. So what’s your point?” “Just don’t write me an essay” “Isn’t a song basically an essay?” “You’re in pain. Do you really think reading will change that?” “Singing makes me more miserable. The good ones are about love, the great ones about heartbreak” “And that won’t help?” “They remind me of you.” “We wouldn’t want that now, would we?” “Maybe this was a bad idea...” “Make us a movie.” “And fund that with the enormous fortune you see lying around?” “Good movies always get made.” “The audience will cry.” “They should. You did.” “Kids won’t like it” “It should be PG-13, considering...” “Isn’t a script basically an extended essay?” “Whatever, just don’t write me an essay.” “What else can you suggest?” “Write me a book.” “R...
