Hang the DJ

I like it when you sleep
for reasons more than one
I slip my hand out from under your body
And count the little hairs on the nape of your neck
One touch and they respond
But so do you and I stop
I kiss your face gently
And watch you squirm away
Some would like it
You clearly don't
I watch the saliva
Drip from your mouth
Like a raindrop on a dry night
Whole for a second and then everywhere
You mumble words I don't understand
But that's during the day as well
I light my cigarette quietly
And perch against the window
Don't want you to leave again
But I need to enjoy this moment
There's a world dying out there
There are stars we haven't seen yet
But that doesn't bother you, for these few hours at least
A world forgetting by a world forgot
We might not be here tomorrow
We might not be here in an hour
And I'll fight every force in the world
To make sure you wake up
Alone
But safe
I don't know where this is going
And I don't like your noises
Can I stand this for the rest of my life
Can I take this when you're tired
Every wrinkle on your face will be the death of me
For that's one moment less
One hour less
Some part of me wants to wake you up
And shout in your face
"Wake up! We're still young
Our legs still work
Let's run into the night
Climb the terraces and get wet in the rain
Wake up because I don't have you forever
Fuck forever, I don't know if I have tomorrow"
Some part of me
Wants those 45 seconds
That I won't get later
Those 58 words
That I might miss out on
That bad breath kiss
That will linger long after you're gone
But
This is your peace
With your drool on my pillow
Your bare body on my shirt
Your hair on my comb
Your scent on my chest
and your sounds in my ear
This is your peace
And who am I to take that from you
So I dive right back in
Subtle enough to spark no response
But you know the shifting weight
And the regurgitating warmth
Like the back of your heart
So you instinctively put your arm around me
And in that moment
I don't need forever
I don't need 45 seconds
I won't remember this
And you won't know this
But there's nothing more that the universe could give me
And there's nothing it could take from me
Asteroids fall around us as you and I drift into outer space
Together.
